When it comes to releasing new consoles when your old one isn't doing too well SEGA isn't the shining example of that.
Nintendo is known for supporting their home consoles for at least 5 years. Nintendo is not in a position to hurt consumer trust. As a Wii U owner I would not buy the NX if it dropped next year at all. Because how do I know Nintendo isn't going to abandon ship on that one if things start going south? Not many people would be too keen that after buying a PS4 or XBO that they would have to run out and buy the PS5 and the XB2(?) 3-4 years later. And like I have said many times if anything the NX is more than likely Nintendo's next handheld system and not home console as it fits more of the criteria for handhelds than it does for the home console. Also for the fact we won't be seeing it till mid next year also tells me we won't see a solid release for it till the following year.

Thank you for conveniently ignoring two of my points.

Did u feel burned by Nintendo when GBA was replaced 3.5 years after launch?

Did Xbox fans feel burned when 360 released 4 years after launch?

Ur Sega examples are in the slightest the same thing Nintendo would be doing. Sega lost trust because they repeatedly dropped support before they really gave a shot. Sega CD & 32x were both expensive add-ons that got very little support followed by releasing the most expensive next-gen console that also got very little support in the 3 years it was on the market. Sega pissed off fans by not supporting their devices, they pissed off retailers by not letting them in on the surprise early launch, they also pissed off developers by making hard to develop for hardware and not letting them know about the surprise early launch as well. Sega pissed off everybody from 94-98 while losing money in the process.

And no, Nintendo is not known for supporting their consoles for 5 years. What relevant titles did Nintendo 64 get after 2000? Paper Mario. What relevant titles did Gamecube get after 2005? Just Zelda. What relevant titles did Wii get after 2010? Zelda & Kirby.

Just to add to that ... most people got their NES in 1987-1989, the system wasn't even widely distributed on a national scale in North America until '87. I for example got my NES in summer of 1989.

For most people Nintendo replaced the NES with the SNES after maybe 2-3 years. And lemme tell ya ... most kids were *thrilled* that the Super NES was coming not unhappy. In fact I remember at the time that it felt like Nintendo was taking forever to launch the Super NES, lol.

New hardware is a good thing people. Imagine playing Super Mario World or Zelda III on the NES instead? Or even today, would you prefer Mario Kart 8 or Xenoblade X in 480p with badly downgraded visuals on the Wii?

And you're right the "Nintendo supports consoles for 5 years" thing is a myth ... it's more like 4 years at best, the last year is basically just a throw-away year where you get maybe one notable new game.
