It's very hard to track down. If you google NPD sales for Genesis, you'll find some info, but it's scant. Here is a link to a sales source stating that the Genesis maintained it's lead over the SNES in the US.

"Indirect Network Effects and the Product Cycle: Video Games in the U.S., 1994–2002"

It shows that as of 1995, the SNES had 8.5 million to the Genesis' 10.6 units sold in the US.
