New 3DS I can understand.

Wii U however...

I feel the opposite, actually. If you listen to the early talks about the philosophy behind the console, the name makes sense. Wii was supposed to bring everyone together. The name was written in a way pronouncable in every language, the iis were people standing together, etc. The Wii U wanted to continue to draw people together, but also focus on the individual, hence the creation of miiverse, a refocusing (or so they promised) on the hardcore gamer, the gamepad allowing for asynchronous multiplayer giving a unique experience for a particular player (hence launching with Nintendo Land), and so they stuck with the English-pronoun-written-in-a-more-universally-pronounable-way naming pattern to reflect their new philosophy. It was a complex message to sell and their marketing team failed spectacularly. Did the name make things worse? Maybe, but you can't say they didn't put significant thought into it. Certainly more so than "it's a new model of the 3DS line so let's call it the New 3DS."
