It only looks better cos the image itself is much higher quality, (way above actual PS2 res) the XCX ones are compressed to hell.

Art is obviously subjective, but technically, PS2 could not come close to XCX's characters.

I understand that is an emulator shot, and I know those pictures are in lousy quality. I can judge beyond that just fine. XCX has a very unique look, and maybe it'll work maybe it won't. I think they maybe went too far with a few things and neglected some important aspects of the design this time around.

Xenoblade Chronicles was one of the best looking games of the last generation, and I wish the design of the sequel built on that instead of going with this weird new art direction. I expected better considering this is a WiiU title and what Nintendo and Platinum and a few others have already achieved. I still pray it'll work out.

Even in Xenoblade on Wii, character detail was sacrificed in order to render large and detailed worlds; it seems they went with the same approach this time, but for whatever reason switched to a more anime-inspired character style.

It should also be noted that this is their first game using HD-level graphics and programmable pixel shaders, so it's possible they are encountering some of the same stumbling blocks that PS3/360 devs did back in 2005-2007.
