I think the excitement is more for the speculation, more than anything. We're nearing the dead times until E3 before we get any new information on stuff coming up. So just about anything that is a rumor will be speculated until almost every angle is covered.
As far as Nintendo is concerned they already consolidated their hardware and software teams and their game production has really increased lately. It should be like this for the forseeable future. The real question will be if Fusion happens. If it does and it has scaleable graphics between the 2, then game droughts should be rare.
