Yes, Iwata said that in response to requests for online games on the GameCube. He cited that the bestselling games of the previous year were offline titles while online games failed to gain traction, so that's why Nintendo wasn't going to make online games for the GC. It's a quote that is often taken out of context to prove some kind of point. Iwata's statement was obviously not something that applied to their future systems, hence why Mario Kart DS went online in November 2005.

The problem with your point though is that the Wii online system was a joke, and the Wii U is about 8 years behind in terms of online. Not to mention 3D World didn't even have online. They still shun online.

The fact they don't have achievements is a joke. Achievements should be standard in 2012.

Nintendo even has the perfect system for achievements: coins.

  • One yellow coin = 10 achievements
  • One red coin = 20 achievements
  • One blue coin = 50 achievements
  • Power Star = 1,000 achievements (or platinum trophy)

They shun online? I'm pretty sure their 3 biggest titles last year (Mario Kart/Smash Bros/Pokemon) all featured strong online features.

Also what is so bad about Nintendo's online? Ya I know PSN and XBL have more features but then again they cost $50-60/year or about the cost of a brand new console over the course of 5 years while Nintendo's is free so I think that's a pretty fair trade off.
