Yes, Iwata said that in response to requests for online games on the GameCube. He cited that the bestselling games of the previous year were offline titles while online games failed to gain traction, so that's why Nintendo wasn't going to make online games for the GC. It's a quote that is often taken out of context to prove some kind of point. Iwata's statement was obviously not something that applied to their future systems, hence why Mario Kart DS went online in November 2005.

Well, it makes more sense if it was said back then.  What he said sounded as though it was a quote made recently or at least last gen when online games were gaining popularity.
