I think this is probably the right answer. Great writer and director, sensitive and respectful to the fans. Has spent years doing the Comic-Con (and the like) circuits. Has done sci fi and fantasy (of a sort). Think he is well equipped to pay homage to the source material while crafting an interesting and credible tale with characters you will actually give a crap about.

See, I disagree because Whedon has not done anything involving high fantasy at all. I expect he would not do a bad job, but the first season (the one which would be make or break for it) would be a learning curve for him.
