Even if the Wii U had an x86 CPU I don't think support would've been much better unless the system as a whole was whole generational leap forward.

Probably true, but sticking to the same CPU architecture as the Gamecube and Wii didn't help. 

I can't see a PPC setup being at all viable for a next gen platform.
