For me Ubuntu does a few things too fast. Upstart, systemd, Unity desktop... It's way more different than just a Debian with more current packages. Even worse is Mint. Currently I am more convinced by Arch linux which also has their own flavor but it's a rolling distro and do a lot of things right, in my opinion.

The systemd situation was badly handled. It's the same thing with the Mir vs Wayland problem. Unity is another thing, I don't see a problem with it. Linux already has a lot of different interfaces, so another one isn't a problem. And being a Gnome based distro, Gnome 3 broke all their usabity for years before fixing it, so doing in their own way was probably a good decision. But upstart was just a case of being stuborn.

The main reason I like Ubuntu is because it receives the best support in softwares. Most apps will have a DEB package or are in its repositories. It's easier to get develper tools on it, which is a number one priority for me. In general, it's well balanced if you aren't willing to fuss with things. I'm wanting to try Arch for quite some time. I love rolling release distros since my time with Aptosid. I tried Fedora, but I found it quite unstable and more like a beta for Red Hat Enterprise. Mandriva was awesome, but it got discontinued. I used it on my desktop, that was the only machine without Ubuntu, but since them I ended up with it on all my PCs.

I don't want any of these but then I know that Linux has the mentality to introduce stuff that is not Unix. I never had a problem with the init-system, still it will be gone soon. I never had a problem with Xorg, still many want to get rid of it.

I guess I would better go with BSD in the long run but then again "packages" there are also not the most current, leave aside hardware support.

Ubuntu is of course just famous now and the "go to"-distribution and I used Xubuntu a lot in the past and could live with it quite good.

Fedora was never my cup of tea. I don't like RPM and yum is just awful slow, while they at least have the delta-rpm-system.

Mandriva I never tried because it was french and they say "ordinateur" to computer which is just... Well, I didn't try it because it was french ;)
