I agree that particle effects are massively overused in general. But for Metroid it would work really well to sell the exploring abandoned worlds and derelicts angle. It could even be used as the new console reveal:
Samus' ship lands on a decaying landing pad, throwing up dust everywhere, cables from shattered monitors swaying. Samus exits the ship and the POV cuts to first person, you can see dust motes in the area, dust settling from the landing, perhaps a few sparks going off etc. A shadow flickers in the corner of the shot and Samus turns to see Ridley looking ultra next-gen. Screen goes black and title card pops up, "coming 2017, exclusively to New Nintendo Console".
