That's true for the most part. My USB stick that I'm using on the Wii U is USB 3.0 and has slow write speeds, is faster on read speeds, but is still probably a little faster than top USB 2.0 speeds for both. It is a cheaper USB 3.0 too.
I figure that read speeds are more important and if a game is constantly writing for saves that it's just going to wear down the USB stick that much faster (so I should be wary of games that do that.)
More expensive sticks are usually better for speeds, but I ended up buying my stick because it was the cheapest 32GB that I could buy from a local store at the time that had a 5 year warranty.
