Whether it's called a beta or online demo is moot. The point is that Nintendo should provide a way for people to sample Splatoon ahead of it's launch.
Give us 3 maps and a couple of game modes to test servers/balance/whatever, but ultimately, to prove to the fanbase that Nintendo can do an FPS style game. Do it as an invitational (similar to Smash 3DS demo), to give a bit of hype around it.
