The issue is Nintendo wouldn't get a cut of the software sales/rentals/subscription fee, so they would never allow it.
The whole point of making hardware is to make money off the software royalties, allowing another service whether it's from Sony or Coca-Cola or Apple or whoever to bypass paying royalties to you as a hardware manufacturer while still having access to your userbase defeats the whole point of being a hardware provider.
