I agree that the damage sponge mechanic was adopted, however it is only a subset of regenerating health ... 

The damage sponge effect is only a side effect or a consequence of regenerating health so the same can't be said of the inverse ...

It's the idea though; the ability to take punishment and then recover if you don't get hit for long enough, instead of relying on health packs. It changed the whole genre, to the point where it's unusual now for an FPS not to have it.
