It doesn't make it inherently easier, but only having to render a very limited region of space (along with only a handful of models) usually means that fighters run at a higher performance rate. It's why Street Fighter 4 managed to hit 720p/60fps on weaker hardware almost 6 years ago, and why SSBU is Nintendo's only self made 1080p/60fps title. smash bros is 1080p 60fps because it's graphics are lower than the average wii u graphics. a game being side scrolling doesn't make anything easier. it's up to the developer on what to do, like any other game.
