Because Nintendo's been in the game longer than the competition, you have a lot of different factions who signed on at very different eras. This is also how you get the "I'm a Nintendo fan, but... (insert stock anti-Nintendo rant)," because they also have a lot of former fans from different eras.
Thus there are many different camps. The other day, on another site, i got into it with a guy who swore up and down that Super Mario Galaxy was just as controversial as Metroid: Other M, and "bad" for more or less the same reasons.
