It's important to know for comparison's sake. That while, yes, Nintendo and in particular the 3DS have been dominant for some time, the overall size of the industry has shrunk considerably since 2009.
This sort of echos what Iwata was saying in an interview that was published last month. That in Japan, 3DS is the only system in history that has ever had four consecutive two million-sellers in four months. This means that yes, 3DS is incredibly successful, but it also signals that most software sales are from AAA titles and that the middle of the market is vanishing. The AAA sales are strong, but they're not enough to make up for the overall loss.
