His love for the series is what, I think, keeps the series afloat, at least for now. Pikmin 3 isn't exactly a success, but apparently Miyamoto just confirmed us that a fourth entry it's more inevitable than a new F-Zero.

I get that he loves the series, but I think it's a stretch to say they'd abandon it without him. Nintendo have continued franchises after lukewarm sales before.
