.... why is selling less than a mill considered a flop now?

Because Square Enix was disappointed with the 5 million sales of Tomb Raider reboot.

Really, i don't think Bayonetta 2 was such a big flop... I mean, you can clearly see that the game had lower budget, than most AAA game (most of the cutscenes were still images, there were only a few character to be voiced, most of them are voiced by the same VA, etc). Also, big AAA publishers need 6 million sales because 70% of the games budget is marketing... Bigger marketing cost has to be compensated with higher sales. Bayonetta 2 had pretty weak marketing. A dedicated Nintendo Direct, some ads didn't really cost that much. They knew it was a niché title and won't sell CoD numbers. So I think it was actually profitable. Most AAA publisher has gone bankrupt BECAUSE they wanted to sell CoD numbers with games, which is clearly not meant for the casual market. Also, if you look at the install base... The Wii U and Vita has the highest attach rate for niché games.

Profitable or not, it just came to Wii U because it was a cheap purchase for Nintendo and helped to expand the Wii U library.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
