Here's hoping they also fix the camera and controls and make it so you don't get taken out of the level every time you get a star .

It really doesn't. I'm saying this as someone who's first consoles were the PS1 and N640, who played Mario 64 back in the day and who thinks a good number of those games still look good. When I picked it up it a couple years ago for the first time in 4 years, I was surprised at how much worse than I expected the graphics were.
