Michael Jordan might not be the best analogy--Babe Ruth I think makes more sense.
Right after the Black Sox scandal MLB was reeling and in crisis, possibly on the brink of folding. Fewer people were going to games and whole infrastructure for MLB ws incredibly weak. Enter this guy destroying the ball and hitting home runs in numbers greater than some teams as a whole were doing. Attendance got hiked, home runs became a thing around the game as a whole leading to more attendance hike, and people allowed themselves to put the scandal in the past. Saved the game, Ruth did.
This analogy works pretty damn well when used with Miyamoto/Nintendo and the Great Video Game Crash.
My consoles and the fates they suffered:
Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)
A more detailed history appears on my profile.
