Well they probably could patch the system to be less dependent on the gamepad.
So many games actually requiring the gamepad is the real issue.
In my opinion, they should release a Wii U without the Gamepad for $199 and call it the Starter Edition. Then patch all their noteworthy games to work with a Pro Controller. They literally have nothing to lose by doing that and could boost hardware sales.
