Except people don't like Van Gogh because he's famous.
They like his art because of the pattern of his brush strokes, because of his choice of colour, his choice of subjects, the way what he painted became more than the subject.
To dismiss a great artist because they're famous is to miss out on some of the greatest examinations of the human condition. Most people interested in art aren't swayed by popularity like it's X Factor, the work stands on its own (generally; the back story of the artist/location can give extra significance, but a good story will never make bad art good).
And people who like art have their own tastes as well. For instance I can't stand Andy Warhol. And find myself drawn to the Picassos and Matisses.
