Why has Nintendo given up on Metroid?

Compared to the other entries they have released, no, it doesn't sell as well. I don't think it's abandoned, they are just putting other stuff, bigger stuff, before it.

They've released many games on Wii U that won't reach the sales of Metroid Prime 1 or 3. 

Generally smaller games in comparison. As in non main franchises. Big franchises like DK:TF, Mario, MK, Smash are all generally better sellers than Metroid.To take direct sales comparisons in this situation wouldn't make sense since the install base is much smaller on the Wii U. DK on Wii and 3DS was much bigger than it ended up being on the Wii U, so in that situation it was likely just a miscalculation. The rest mostly speak for themselves. 

Just give it some time. There has been rumors about Metroid being in development.
