How can that even be faked? If it's slimmer than before, it's obviously a slim version. How they achieve that is completely irrelevant.

A slim version isn't going to magically persuade someone to buy that console. It's either a price cut, better library at that point or added value that comes with the slim. A new design adds value to those who a. hate the old design or b. like the new design, console purchases, like any other consumer product, are just as much affected by design as feature set. Smaller, more compact, thinner hardware is synonymous with greater technical prowess currently. 

Even TVs and Speakers which generally become more powerful with size will be considered less technologically advanced if they have a thinner or smaller but just as loud counterpart respectively.
