Really? Because most people (at least in the US) will say that MS makes the best controllers. How is it possible that MS can perfectly engineer a controller, with no wasted space, high quality parts and huge efficiency, that not only sports a rather beautiful minimalistic face design while being as internally deep and imaginative as the ocean floor?

Of all the MS controllers they've made the 360 is probably my favourite of theres (the XB1 is similar but feels a bit off compared to 360), but kind of sucks that they dont just have built in battery as I do find that bulkiness of the battery pack for the 360 to be clunky. Pretty sad that MS controllers are the same price as PS and they don't have built in battery. And their D-pad sucks but has good analog sticks.
But to your point, how does a company that can make a good controller yet still make a massive system? My answer, MS is not a designing company. Sure they release a few nice looking products, but overall their products aren't all appealing. Lets forget about the very first Xbox controller =)

Just look at it from this point of view. Why does the controller not include a li-on battery and still have the same price? Because it makes them more money. Everything in terms of the design of both the controller and system come down to one thing. Money. The xb1 slim will prompt repurchases by current owners, along with satiating power constraint concerns by fence sitters. It also costs much less for the parts they've decided to use in this current xb1. I really can't stress enough how cheap these components are. Nothing in there is custom. It's all off the shelf pc parts. And when you see the slim and its customized space management is, you'll wonder why they didn't do this in the first place. The answer is most assuredly not 'heating'. The answer, is money.

It was also adds to the mounting evidence of a rushed system launch.
Furthermore, while the OG Xbox was a sturdily built machine, the 360 was purposely made flismy using heat sensitive solders in the hottest places of the console resulting in thermal failure regardless of external PSU, infamous disk shredding etc...
First rounds of XB1 are par the course in fact.
