Simple: it makes sense.

Olimar and his Pikmin are supersized in Smash, but they don't look weird like that. Snake was out of place so everything about him didn't make sense, thankfully he's not around anymore. Sonic could always swim (kinda).

But if they reduced Ridley to the same size as Bowser is, for example, it would be extremely weird. His design makes him a pretty difficult character to mess around with when it comes to size.

Sonic could never swim. In the Olympics, he used a freaking life saver during the swimming parts.
