What if, as per Drive Club, Halo Master Chief Collection, or Smash 3DS, online startup problems dig into its scores? Even MK8 caught some flack for perceived shortcomings of  its online, like no chat betweens strangers, no option to invite friends to a lobby, no message notifications, etc. As a very multiplater-oriented game Smash U could find itself on the recieving end of similar complaints.

Highly doubt it since it's mostly local multiplayer oriented. Reviewers want a nice online multiplayer when they buy a Halo game, so they deduct points from it if it doesn't work well - however, they're not expecting a good online from Smash, so in fact they might even give it a few points after being surprised at how decent it is when compared to the 2 previous releases in the franchise.

I'm still pretty sceptical; didn't IGN just give a Pokemon game 7.8 because it had "too much water"? How many people saw that coming? Who would have predicted that the first next gen console Killzone would score a 73? These things can come out  of the blue.
