Bad anology. A more fitting one would be not watching Halloween 4-8 if I couldn't get a hold of Halloween 3. When that movie has no link to the whole series. The point is I wanted both. And not a down port, on top of a locked system game. I have no real drive to buy the series without it. Don't want to go near Gamestop. Don't want a N3ds.

I would have to agree with this analogy also.
It is more in line with Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.
The games generally do not relate to each other whatsoever.
The only thing they share is some of the same monsters/creatures within their universe.
The games are more of a spiritual sequal rather than an actual sequal/prequal/interqual or anything between.
