EVERYONE always gets confused with things like "Wii HD" or a new DS design.
The Game Boy Advance started with a horizontal, large configuration, with no backlight. Then the SP came out...it was a flip design and was backlit. Finally there was the Micro, a very tiny version of the GBA. But NONE of these were different in their capabilities...you could play any GBA game on any GBA system.
If there was a new DS with new hardware features and new games to go with it...the old DSs could not play those games...and that would be sooo stupid.
Honestly, I don't expect an announcement on a new DS design until the end of this year at the earliest.
