I think the N3DS isn't just an upgrade of the regular system. With the handheld market shrinking, Nintendo is waiting and looking for a way to implement some sort of element in its hardware (maybe the Fusion, maybe a relation with the QoL stuff) and get back the lost public. I'm sure the N3DS will replace the original system worldwide in 2016 and prolongue the lifespam of the console, maybe to 2020 being the maximum. Of cousre, this is only if the model sells as well as the 3DS for a long time. If sales become dangerously low, they will release their new handheld in 2017.
