Nintendo (and most VGC users as well it seems) forget that Smash is for a completely different target group. Mario Kart sells well over time to families and friends, pretty much "every" gamer; Smash is a game that people buy who love gaming and don't just play it with friends at the weekend. Those people already own a Wii U because they can't wait buying new stuff so they pre-order Smash as well. Sales will drop way harder than Mario Kart's and its impact on hardware won't be "similarly dramatic".
But if saying "this is going to sell loads!" makes even more people want it to stay cool, I'm ok with this kind of PR talk.

I'm betting most smash buyers don't own a wii u yet. and because holydays, I don't think sales will drop quickly. MK may have longer legs but smash always has legs too.
