It's because the early 20 somethings were kids and that was their favorite console. Childhood has a way of making things seem more grand than they really were. 

Back in 2001, I was 21-22 and I can assure you, no one and I mean NO one liked this thing. I couldn't post one positive comment about any Gamecube game without getting ripped to shreds.

I was 12 in 2001 but I still remember it being a laughing stock, and as an SNES/N64 kid, I found its entries in Nintendo's key franchises crushingly disappointing.
