If MS wasn't in the industry or bailed out and it was just Sony for Nintendo to contend with, this would be a more viable option for Nintendo IMO. Two's company but three's a crowd. 

of course there is room for Nintendo. Imagine Wii, with same power/on par with PS360? Total domination. But is Nintendo, they never do what they should do. Now is think is smart to grab some ports and be ready for the next console. 

A Wii on par with the PS360 would've also cost $400 at launch and had far more limited appeal at that price point. 

Wii was just a one off miracle fad, it's not a repeatable, reworkable scenario, especially not now that Apple/Google have monopolized casual gaming by effectively offering it for free on devices that are 10x more mainstream than the Wii could ever have dreamed of being. 

GameCube did a lot of things you guys are asking for (roughly equal power, easy enough to port to, basically all the same Western IP third party games).
