To you specifically and to many people in here calling this BS:
The competition have NOT been region-free for that long at all. The PS2 was region-locked as well. And also the new consoles have a form of region-locking where the region-lock is on the disc rather than on the system. The excuse isn't BS, and I would say the main reason Nintendo doesn't do the same is because of what happened with the DS and people screwing around with flash carts and bypassing certain things.
