Yeah, Nintendo seems to understand that a smooth framerate and detail are more important than 1080p, and that 720p is the sweet spot for attractive visuals on Wii U. It's the right choice in my opinion. Which is why Smash Bros breaking this pattern baffles me.
I just hope they haven't sacrificed the framerate for more pixels.

They already made the tech to sacrifice polygon density for the 3DS version. I guarantee its being used here as well during motion. It was a great idea to do in the 3DS version to push it to the breaking point, and its probably what's being used here to push the WiiU version to 1080p with a locked 60FPS.

I just worry that with tons of mayhem going on at once in 8 player mode, 1080p might incur a framerate hit. A steady 60fps is very important in a fighting game.
Maybe they'll run at a lower screen resolution in 8 player mode, like Hyrule Warriors did when playing cooperatively...
