I must say Japanese is a LOT easier to learn than Chinese. But I'm probably biased so...   Russian sounds really cool as well, I'd like to learn that one day.

Is Japanese a tonal language? Because afaik, that's one of the things that makes Chinese as hard as it is. Russian is because it's the root of all Slavic languages, and if you know Russian you can pretty much communicate with all slavic people.
