I think the Wii U is performing poorly, but I'm not comparing it to the Wii. I'm comparing it to the Gamecube. First of all, the Wii U is behind the GC, both in the same timeframe from launch, and in weekly sales. Second of all, the Gamecube was sold at a profit from launch, the Wii U still isn't. So even when comparing it to a really low benchmark (GC) it's doing badly.
