Why does it matter? The Hero of Time failed and the possibility of any other Link doing so hasn't even been considered.

The most accepted  theory is that he only failed because Zelda sent him back differently (using the Ocarina) than how he does normally (using the sword) making him disappear from the sword timeline and allowing Ganon to win. Not really a "link wasnt good enough" scenario.

But then wouldn't that be a "Link wasn't around" scenario (similar to the events prior to WW) instead of "Link was defeated"?

Yeah, but I guess the logic is that since Ganon won, Link tecnically did lose. Either way it's more fanon than canon.
