They launched the DS because the GBA was slowling to a crawl, and the refreshes did not do anything to really boost sales, and they felt that the brand was seen as too kiddy. So I don't really see how the GBA could have reached such colossal figures.

They released the DS because the PSP was coming. Plain and simple. 

The GBA's 2003 was monstrous, 20+ million in shipments, higher than any year for the 3DS.
