It's actually not quite as bad as I thought. I was bracing for a 25k-range opening. Is it great, no, but its in line with DKC: TF's launch, so Nintendo can't exactly single it out.
Nintendo should stick with it, they're never going to build an audience for this style of games if they keep starting from scratch. Go ahead and greenlight Bayonetta 3 if Platinum wants to make for Fusion/4DS/whatever-they-call-it and grow the franchise.
They can maybe port this game in the future too to their future handheld.
I almost kinda wonder if Nintendo should just start a subscription model for this style of game (Bayo 1/2, Hyrule Warriors, Fatal Frame, Xenoblade, Devil's Third, etc.) where you get access to all of them for a subscription fee ala PS Plus, kind of a premium service for older Nintendo players.
Or maybe something like Nintendo club, but something specific for these style of games where you get bonuses like art books, figurines, etc. for buying in.
