Fusion is really the only way for Nintendo to go.

Every other avenue is pretty much a dead end for them.

Unified they will be able to provide a good 11-18 releases per year and 2-3 "big" holiday games each season.

They'll be able to get some Japanese support at least too, as they do on the 3DS to throw in on top of that.

They should be able to sell 65-80 million units at least of a unified platform even if mobile continues to eat chunks of their audience, and that should be enough to generate a solid profit provided they don't bank on any stupid expensive gimmicks next time (like 3D screens or tablet controllers).

By not having to make 2 Mario Karts, 2 2D Marios, 2 3D Marios, 2 Smash Bros., 2 Animal Crossings, etc. etc. they should also be able to take more chances in making new original IP without upsetting their core fanbase that needs a new Mario/Zelda/Smash. By making more original IP they have a better chance of finding the next big franchise that can carry their business for the future 10 years+.
