How could they not know it wouldn't be a problem? They knew the cost of developing Bluray (which they are a cofounder of) so ofcourse they knew the system would be insanely expensive, they just hoped PS2 fans would swallow it anyway. Otherwise they would've gone a cheaper route if their focus was consumers.
