I'm curious what people are using to define it as a success or flop. I think 1 million would be a very respectable number even though that means they definitely lost money on it.

Which is your estimated budget? If they distribute 1 million copies, that means around 28 million in revenue (remember Nintendo itself is the platform holder and they don't pay licenses fees to themselves). I think for this game the budget would be on the lines of 20-25 million, so It think with just 850k units they should go even and start making a profit, and I do believe they will struggle to reach that number, but if they do go to 1 million that should make it profit.

Bayonetta sold 2 million between the PS3 and 360 and lost money. Wonderful 101 had 1.5x the budget of Bayonetta and we can only assume that Bayonetta 2 is on par or higher (especially with the Bayonetta 1 port and added DLC). They've already spent more on advertising and exposure for this game than the first Bayonetta, it's going to take a lot to profit on.
