2. In most areas the WiiU GPU is an improvement compared to PS360 but in others it's actually worse. So depending on what hardware resources are most limiting for this game it may well be that PS360 just perform better with the game

We don't have confirmed specs on Wii U's GPU, Latte, but we do know from devs that it's a GPGPU several generations ahead of the PS3/360's and has Direct X 10 and 11 level features.

Yes the feature set is much improved (that's why I noted lighting as an area where improvements may have been made), but most leaks/rumors also say that some of the raw performance values are worse than on the X360; afair pixel rate is one of those areas were it is slightly slower than the X360 GPU which might explain why they opted for a lower resolution on the WiiU version.

And I didn't want to start a discussion about the hardware specs; I just don't like it when a lower resolution is attributed to lazy devs, when there may as well be good reasons for their choice.

Well like I say, we don't have confirmed specs on its pixel fill rate and such.

There have been cases of Wii U versions running at higher resolutions than their PS3/360 counterparts, like Splinter Cell Blacklist and Call of Duty Ghosts. There was one other case I can recall where it ran lower, Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, but that was when it was rendering a separate screen on the Gamepad and v-sync'd where the other versions had screen tearing.

I suspect it's laziness here though.
