Because in two years the consoles will be #1 cheaper #2 less guinea-pig-style since they will probably have a redesign #3 the games will have a significant difference as you said.  BONUS: Madden FIfa etc is all a patch for the prior version. Even 60 bucks it to much of a simple patch and then adding 400 bucks on top is way way to much for a patch.

Well, I don't think they care too much about a redesign. The yearly patch as you put it is mostly true, but, proven by the sales of the games, a lot of people who play EA Sports just don't care to pay 60 bucks. The 400 bucks on top is the investment for the future sports games, because there will be a point where the previous gen won't be supported properly anymore. And even if the consoles get cheaper, they can't get themselves to care enough, appearantly.
