Pachter never predicted that Wii, DS, or 3DS would fail. He was very optimistic for all of them, though he did seem to think the Vita would outrun the 3DS. He was never bog on the Wii U's sales potential, with good reasoning to back him up.
Generally though, what seems to be the case is that Pachter doesn't have all that much more feeling with what the market wants than so many others do. He's making assumptions the best he can, as to advise investors about what different companies would do if they were looking to make money the traditional, American, capitalist way.
But Nintendo are not traditional American capitalists. Their product never aims to be where the market is assumed to move, based on where it's already been. Nintendo more often than not rely on moving the market in new directions by showing something surprising or unexpected to the world.
This tactic cannot be eqully successful every time. Or achieve success at the same speed. It's also unlikely to be executed equally well every time.
Saying that there isn't a place for Nintendo hardware will in the long run prove to be one of his sillier statements. Developers are moving back to consoles after the social media bubble has deflated, and parents are slowly moving back to giving their children sturdy handhelds with long life spans, instead of flimsy smart phones that other kids with ridicule for being outdated not half a year later.
