The PS3 and Xbox 360 were not later bloomers, the Wii just overshadowed them.
The Wii U hasn't necessarily peaked yet, since we don't have enough information, so rest assured it will start to sell better.
The problems that make the Wii U's outcome look grim are, in order of seriousness are, the sales of the console hitting a low baseline in its second year, the short life spans of Nintendo Consoles, and failing 3rd party support
Not to mention, its unnecessary to prove the Wii was an anomaly.
