Even that, Nintendo probably couldn't even re-create that type of reaction today because people wanted basically Ocarina of Time 2 so badly, so that was like 6 years of pent up frustration/waiting coming out.
But the fact with Zelda is the two more realistic Zelda games with an older Link (OoT and TP) crush the other Zelda games in sales. It's not a coincidence, yes some people are excited about another cartoony/cell shaded Zelda, but there's a portion of the audience that it's never going to get because of the art style (not saying I agree with this attitude, but it definitely exists).
Wind Waker, Smash, and Hyrule Warriors will probably ensure a good chunk of the Zelda fanbase will be on the Wii U before Zelda U comes out too, thus limiting its sales boost potential anyway.
